Greek Energy Minister Meets Incoming US Ambassador in New York

Greece’s Minister of Environment and Energy, Stavros Papastavrou, held a meeting in New York with Kimberly Guilfoyle, the newly appointed U.S. ambassador to Athens, on Thursday, 25 Sept. Guilfoyle is set to be sworn in on Monday and is expected to arrive in Greece at the end of Oct.

Earlier in the day, the minister took part in a roundtable discussion hosted by Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov. The talks centered on the strengthening of Greek-Bulgarian relations, with particular emphasis on bilateral energy cooperation. Key topics included the vertical energy corridor, the Alexandroupolis FSRU project, and the potential of the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

Papastavrou also joined a closed-door session organized by the Atlantic Council and the Antenna Group, focusing on relations between the European Union and the Gulf states.

On Friday, his schedule included a meeting with Archbishop Elpidophoros of America at the headquarters of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

While in New York, the minister also conferred with EU Commissioner for Climate Action Wopke Hoekstra on the sidelines of the UN Climate Summit. Their discussions covered Greece’s progress in the energy sector, including advances in clean technologies such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and the country’s forthcoming legal framework to support these developments.

The European Commission welcomed Greece’s leadership role in energy transition, highlighting the importance of the Prinos CEF project and related Innovation Fund initiatives. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring environmental safety and strengthening cooperation in the field of sustainable energy.
