Greek Finance Minister and EuroGroup president, Kyriakos Pierrakakis said 2026 “can open new paths for every citizen and every family” in his New Year’s message on social media.

In the post on a video post on Facebook, Pierrakakis stated that “2025 left a clear footprint on the Greek economy. With the major changes already delivering results, and with trust being built day by day, 2026 can open new paths for every citizen and every family.”

Among the points he underlined were, rent refunds and permanent support for pensioners. He stated that “from this year, one month’s rent at the end of the year will be returned by the state to the tenant’s bank account,” while at the same time “the €250 net financial support for 1.5 million pensioners over the age of 65 is being made permanent.”

Across-the-board reduction of financial burdens:
“Taxes are being reduced for everyone — public and private sector employees, self-employed professionals, pensioners and farmers,” Mr Pierrakakis emphasized, highlighting younger earners in particular, noting that “the tax rate for income up to €20,000 is reduced to zero.”

Abolition of bank charges and debt regulation:
He underlined that “the new out-of-court debt settlement mechanism is proving to be a very strong tool for supporting citizens and businesses across the country.”
