Veteran New Democracy (ND) deputy and former minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis on Thursday announced his resignation from Parliament and withdrawal from politics, in a message posted on social media.

According to reports, he announced his resignation after first meeting on Thursday morning with PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Varvitsiotis has served in Parliament since 2000, having been elected as a deputy in 11 consecutive ballots. His last Cabinet position was as shipping minister last year, before resigning in September 2023 in the wake of heightened criticism over his statements – deemed as insensitive – after a passenger drowned when he was pushed off a ferry boat ramp by two crew members at the port of Piraeus.

Reports have the now ex-deputy, the son of long-time ND cadre and former minister Yannis Varvitsiotis, entering the private sector, and possibly the shipping industry. Later reports have him assuming a management position at a local Piraeus-area shipyard.
