Mitsotakis Reiterates Greece’s Support for Ceasefire in Ukraine During Leaders’ Call

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis participated today in a high-level video conference on Ukraine, reiterating Greece’s full support for an immediate and unconditional 30-day ceasefire as a first step toward a lasting peace.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis participated today in a high-level video conference on Ukraine, reiterating Greece’s full support for an immediate and unconditional 30-day ceasefire as a first step toward a lasting peace.

The meeting was convened by French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, with participation from European leaders including Mitsotakis, who joined by teleconference.

French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Murch, and British Prime Minister Kir Starmer arrived in Kyiv on Saturday morning to join Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in a coordinated show of support for Ukraine and a call for a “full and unconditional” 30-day ceasefire from Russia.

In their joint statement, the four European leaders also affirmed, “We reiterate our support for President Trump’s calls for a peace agreement and ask Russia to stop raising obstacles. Alongside the United States, we call on Russia to accept a full and unconditional 30-day ceasefire to allow for talks aimed at a just and lasting peace,” as reported by the Athens News Agency.

This meeting follows the U.S. stepping back from mediating Russia-Ukraine peace talks and comes shortly after the U.S. signed a new mineral deal with Ukraine under more favorable terms than previously expected.

The Euopeans are forming a the so-called “alliance of the willing.” The alliance, led by France and the United Kingdom, was established earlier this year amid growing concerns in Europe that the United States may no longer serve as a reliable pillar of support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.

“We need this alliance, and it must be strong enough to guarantee security in line with our shared vision,” Ukrainian Presdient Zelensky has stated.

In a statement posted following the European leaders’ meeting, Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis stated: “I was very pleased to participate in the Leaders’ Call on Ukraine. We need an immediate and unconditional 30-day ceasefire as a first step towards a just and lasting peace agreement.”

Government sources reported that Mitsotakis emphasized Greece’s continued solidarity with Ukraine and aligned Athens with the joint proposal from European allies calling for the ceasefire.
