Ruling New Democracy (ND) appears to be rebounding in voter approval ratings after months of steady decline, with the latest opinion poll results, released on Wednesday, showing a gradual and steady improvement for the center-right party.
Specifically, in an extrapolation of results of a poll conducted by the newspaper Political and presented on the prime-time newscast of Athens-based Ant1 channel, ND is given 31.5%, which means it fields a 16.2%-point lead over its nearest rival, socialist/social democrat PASOK party, which comes in at 15.3% in the specific poll. Third place is reserved for the right-of-center and Eurosceptic Elliniki Lysi (Greek Solution) party. Another six lesser parties, three of which are currently not represented in Parliament, are shown above the 3% threshold of ballots cast in a general election that are needed for representation in the legislature.
Asked about the prospect of a new political party being founded by former prime minister Alexis Tsipras, whEo resigned from parliament this week, eight out of 10 respondents said they would not vote for such a prospective party (“no” or “probably no”), while 16% answered “definitely yes” or “probably yes”.
