The annual wealth declarations of Greece’s political class have been published, offering a glimpse into the personal finances of the country’s leaders. Covering income, assets, real estate, vehicles, loans, and investments, the so-called “pothen esches” statements are intended to promote transparency and accountability.
This year’s disclosures, released by the Parliament’s audit committee, include filings for the financial years 2022 and 2023 from the prime minister, party leaders, cabinet members, MPs, MEPs, and other elected officials.
The wealthiest political leader is Stefanos Kasselakis, currently leading political party Movement for Democracy. His 2024 declaration (covering the 2023 financial year) lists an income of 1.75 million US dollars, along with 3.77 million dollars in shares, real estate holdings in Greece and the United States, and two active business interests. He also reported debts exceeding 1.65 million dollars.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis reported an income of €70,456, 26 property entries across Crete, Ioannina, and the Cyclades, two vehicles, one business participation, and loans totaling €160,560. His bank deposits amounted to €110,668.
His wife, Mareva Grabowski, declared significantly higher income of €315,194 from dividends, property, and other sources. She also reported nearly €780,000 in deposits, several properties in Greece and the UK, participation in a business, and loans exceeding €978,000.
Nikos Androulakis, leader of PASOK, declared deposits exceeding €1 million, income of €128,000, and 16 property entries, mainly in Crete and Athens. Unlike several of his peers, he reported no outstanding loans.
Other political leaders reported more modest means. Sokratis Famellos (SYRIZA ‘s leader since Novmeber 2024) listed income of around €72,500 and deposits under €60,000. Dimitris Koutsoumbas of the Communist Party declared just over €10,000 in deposits and two small apartments. Kyriakos Velopoulos, leader of the Eurosceptic party Ellinikin Lysi (Greek Solution), declared around €269,000 in deposits and four properties.
The wealth declarations also highlighted sharp contrasts: Zoe Konstantopoulou (Plefsi Eleftherias – Course of Freedom) declared income above €100,000 but just over €4,000 in deposits. Dimitris Natsios, leader of Niki, reported income of only €22,600 and deposits of less than €2,000.
