An 18-year-old man who died after a diving accident in Agia Triada near Thessaloniki has become an organ donor, giving four patients with end-stage organ failure a chance for a new life.
The teenager had been hospitalized in an intensive care unit after the accident. Following his death, his family made the difficult decision to proceed with organ donation.
The organ donation and recovery procedure was successfully completed Monday, Aug. 24, at Papageorgiou Hospital in Thessaloniki, in cooperation with Greece’s National Transplant Organization.
Kidneys, liver and heart donated
The teenager’s kidneys, liver and heart were recovered by specialized medical teams from General Laiko Hospital in Athens, the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center and Papageorgiou Hospital.
The organs will be transplanted into four patients suffering from end-stage failure of vital organs, who are expected to receive a new opportunity for life.
Hospital expresses condolences
In a statement issued Tuesday, Papageorgiou Hospital’s administration expressed its sincere condolences to the teenager’s family and highlighted the importance of the donation.
The hospital described organ donation as “the highest expression of humanity and solidarity.”
It also emphasized the importance of raising public awareness about organ donation and transplantation.
