The 18-year-old who stabbed his former girlfriend with a kitchen knife in broad daylight in the middle of a street in Kallithea, southern Athens, says he regrets what he did according to his lawyer.
The young woman spoke to MEGA, describing what she says was a nightmare relationship.
“I had filed a complaint against him twice before for his bad behavior. He would get violent. He would lose his temper out of nowhere. After a very long time, I gave him another, second chance, and the same thing happened again. He was very jealous. He is obsessed with me. And he looks into everything.”
A short time before his arrest, the 18-year-old also threatened his former girlfriend, telling her that he would kill her next time.
“If he had a gun, he would have killed me, ” she said. “He would have shot me in the head. As long as he was walking around free, I was afraid.”
The young suspect, has expressed remorse through his attorney. The prosecutor has charged the suspect with five misdemeanors, and he is due to appear in court under Greece’s fast-track flagrante delicto procedure on Friday.
“What we have to say is a sincere apology to the victim,” his lawyer said. “Unfortunately, they had an altercation. What my client told me was that she spoke to him very badly, both about the breakup of their relationship and about the existence of a third person. As the defense, tomorrow we will request a psychiatric evaluation of the defendant.”
Although only 18, the defendant has a troubled history. The suspect had come to the attention of Greek authorities numerous times in connection with drug cases, theft and incidents of domestic violence. Shortly before this incident, his own sister had reported him over an episode in which he attacked her.
“He had come to the attention of the authorities; we cannot deny that,” his lawyer continued. “His entire family is devastated and at a loss. His sister had asked the police for help so that the young man could be hospitalized, and the police filed a case for domestic violence. All of this could have been avoided if the police and prosecutor’s office had responded the previous time and done what the family was asking: have him hospitalized so that he could receive treatment.”
