25 Wildfires in 24 Hours as Incidents Persist

Fire brigade reports all latest blazes contained at an early stage as heat, dry conditions and strong winds continue to challenge firefighting operations

Twenty-five wildfires broke out across Greece over the past 24 hours, according to the fire brigade, with all of them brought under control at an early stage.

The most worrying incident was a wildfire in a forested area near Kremasti in the municipality of Evrotas, in southern-most Laconia prefecture. Thirty-five firefighters, two wildfire ground teams and nine vehicles were deployed, while three firefighting aircraft and a helicopter assisted. The blaze was brought under control.

Arson investigators are examining the causes of the outbreaks.

The latest incidents come as Greece moves through yet another demanding wildfire season that began with a high number of fires. To Vima reported that about 2,880 fires had been recorded nationwide by June, with western Attica prefecture accounting for 710. Authorities have attributed many outbreaks to human activity, including negligence, illegal dumping and suspected arson, while news reports have repeatedly cited power cable sparks as another primary reason.

Fire activity intensified from June, with major incidents reported in southern Evia (Euboea), Corinth, Boeotia, Thessaloniki, western Attica and other areas. By late June, successive outbreaks were placing increased pressure on the country’s firefighting capacity.
