Four Turkish nationals, all men, were detained by police after a shooting incident this past week in the coastal Nea Makri township, due east of Athens proper.
According to police sources, officers from the organized crime unit detained the four while conducting parallel probes in the northern city of Thessaloniki. One of the suspects brought in for questioning is believed to be one of the alleged shooters.
The shooting occurred on Tuesday afternoon along Marathonos Avenue.
According to witness accounts, three suspects entered a supermarket and approached a fourth man, who was also reportedly a Turkish national. Following a brief altercation inside the store, the man left and headed toward his car parked nearby.
Police said the three suspects then crossed the street and waited inside a mini market, monitoring their target for about 10 minutes. When the man started up his car, they approached the vehicle and fired at least seven shots before fleeing on foot.
The would-be victim drove away, possibly unscathed.
Several gangland style shootouts and assassinations attributed to Turkey-based crime organizations have been witnessed in Greece over the past few years.
