A 44-year-old man was killed on Friday afternoon after falling from the 24th floor balcony of the Apollon Tower on Louizis Riankour Street, under circumstances that remain unclear.
The man, who was of Greek nationality, reportedly fell into the void at around midday. Emergency responders arrived at the scene within minutes: a rapid-response motorcycle unit from EKAV reached the location just three minutes after being alerted, followed shortly by an ambulance. However, paramedics could do nothing, as the man’s death was instantaneous.
Police are currently at the scene investigating the incident.
According to initial information, the man had been at the Deos café-restaurant located on one of the top floors of the building. Witnesses said he was drinking coffee when he suddenly stood up and jumped from the balcony.
This incident follows a similar tragedy that occurred in May, when a 25-year-old man fell to his death from the top floor of the same building.
About Apollon Tower
According to Wikipedia, Apollon Tower is a residential high-rise located at 64 Louizis Riankour Street, on Kanellopoulou Square in Ampelokipoi. Constructed during Greece’s military junta, it was completed in 1973 and stands as the tallest residential building in the country, at 80 meters high with 25 floors.
The tower was built during the period when Law 395/1968 was in effect, allowing greater construction heights between 1968 and 1985. It remains a key landmark of the Panormou neighborhood.
The building is divided into two wings, each with its own pair of elevators, and features a backup generator in case of power failure. A swimming pool is located on the rooftop. Notably, when it was built, superstition led developers to omit the 13th floor — the numbering skips directly from 12 to 14.
Though originally designed as a residential complex, many apartments today are used as offices and medical practices. The top floors (24th and 25th) and the rooftop pool had long been abandoned but were renovated in the summer of 2023. They are now operated by an all-day restaurant and bar.
