The 20-year-old who was injured by police gunfire in Argos remains hospitalized in extremely critical condition. The two police officers involved in the incident are expected to testify Friday after being charged with attempted murder with possible intent while in a calm state of mind.
According to information reported by Greek broadcaster MEGA, the two officers are expected to deny that they acted intentionally, arguing that they fired only warning shots into the air and at a wall, without aiming at the 20-year-old.
At the same time, an internal administrative investigation is expected to be ordered into the case, while procedures are underway to complete the ballistic examination, with the results still pending.
Authorities Examine Ballistics
Speaking to MEGA, Hellenic Police spokesperson Konstantina Dimoglidou stressed the importance of the forensic examination of the 20-year-old in determining how he was injured.
“The forensic examination of the minor is very important, and it has not yet been carried out. We fully understand this because his condition is critical but stable, however a forensic examination must be conducted to clarify the way this person was injured.”
“Since we found shell casings at the scene, obviously the bullets were fired from the officers’ weapons. We will determine which weapon they came from, because this can also be established through the ballistic examination. (…) However, I do not think there is anyone at this moment who believes that two people close to the age of 50, with many years of service in frontline units, who have never caused problems during their careers and have handled very serious incidents, both with families, went out with the intention of injuring or killing a fellow citizen.”
“For 35 minutes, they were chasing a person who attempted twice to run over colleagues. He rammed police vehicles four times, did not stop despite any warning or police sirens.”
The timeline
The incident took place in the Pyrgela area, where police officers signaled the driver to stop for a check. The driver fled, leading to a pursuit through the Argos area that ended at a local supermarket, where the vehicle was brought to a stop.
While attempting to escape, the 20-year-old jumped over a wall, and police officers opened fire, striking him in the head.
An ambulance from Greece’s National Emergency Aid Center (EKAB) arrived at the scene and transported the injured man. The 20-year-old was initially taken to a local hospital and later transferred to Thriasio Hospital.
