Unknown assailants placed gas canisters outside the agricultural subsidy agency's branch in Omonia early Friday, causing minor damage to the entrance but no injuries.

An incendiary attack struck a branch office of OPEKEPE, Greece’s new defunct agricultural subsidy agency, in the early hours of Friday morning in the Omonia district of central Athens, causing minor damage and no reported injuries.

According to available information, unknown individuals placed gas canisters outside the agency’s building on Nestoros Street at around 4 a.m. One of the canisters exploded, damaging the entrance to the branch. No casualties were reported.

OPEKEPE — the Greek Payment and Control Agency for Guidance and Guarantee Community Aid — has been at the center of one of Greece’s most significant ongoing corruption investigations, involving allegations of fraudulent farm subsidy payments and the suspected illegal intervention of ruling-party lawmakers.

Police are investigating the incident and are working to identify the perpetrators and establish a motive for the attack.
