Athens will implement major traffic restrictions in the city center from the evening of Saturday, September 20, through Sunday, September 21, as part of the events organized under the banner “Car-Free Athinas Street,” celebrating World Car-Free Day 2025.
According to the announcement, vehicle access will be prohibited from Saturday, September 20, at 8:00 pm, until Sunday, September 21, at 11:00 pm on key central streets.
Specifically, closures will apply to:
• Athinas Street: between Evripidou and Ermou, including side streets up to the first parallel.
• Karageorgi Servias Street: along its entire length.
• Perikleous Street: along its entire length.
• Athinaidos Street: along its entire length.
• Agias Irinis (Eirinis) Street: along its entire length.
• Agion Asomaton Square: between Sarri and Ermou, including side streets up to the first parallel.
• Ermou Street: between Agion Asomaton and Athinas, including side streets up to the first parallel.
The Police urge drivers to avoid the affected areas to ease congestion and prevent further disruption to the road network.
A weekend of events and activities
Over the course of 24 hours, “Car-Free Athinas Street” will host a wide range of activities for all ages. Visitors can expect creative workshops, children’s events, bicycles and scooters, music performances, storytelling sessions, midnight film screenings, and many more surprises.
The initiative aims to highlight sustainable mobility and create meaningful experiences that bring residents and visitors together. For one weekend, Athens celebrates greener, more sustainable ways of moving and living in the city—while also promoting quality-driven tourism.
