Athens Metro Line 4 Tunnel Nears Completion

The “Athena” tunnel-boring machine nears the end of its journey on Athens Metro Line 4, completing most of the route from Goudi to Evangelismos, while construction continues across 11 of the line’s 15 stations

Athens Metro Line 4 is moving closer to completion as the tunnel-boring machine (TBM) “Athena” prepares to finish its section from Goudi to Evangelismos. The machine has now completed approximately 90% of its route, marking a major milestone in the city’s expanding metro network.

Starting from the Katechaki shaft, Athena has passed through the stations of Goudi, Zografou, Ilisia, Panepistimioupoli, and Kaisariani. The machine’s 100-meter-long head is expected to emerge soon at the Evangelismos shaft, after which it will be disassembled.

Athena’s twin, “Niki,” is progressing in the opposite direction, beginning at the Veikou shaft. It has already passed Alsos Veikou, Galatsi, and Elikonos stations, covering 2.6 kilometers—about 37% of its 7-kilometer route. Niki will continue through Kypseli, Dikastiria, Alexandras, Exarchia, Akadimia, and Kolonaki stations before meeting Athena’s completed tunnel at Evangelismos.

Construction continues simultaneously at 11 of Line 4’s 15 stations, including Alsos Veikou, Galatsi, Elikonos, Kypseli, Dikastiria, Alexandras, Akadimia, Kolonaki, Kaisariani, Ilisia, and Zografou. Work is also underway at the Katechaki and Evangelismos shafts and at the new Operations Control Center in Sepolia.
