Athens Mother Arrested After Newborn Found Alone in Park

A one-month-old baby was discovered near the Acropolis and taken to hospital. Hours later, the child’s mother appeared at a police station claiming her baby had vanished while under another man’s care

A newborn baby was found abandoned in a park near the Acropolis in Athens on Thursday night, prompting a swift police response and raising serious questions about the circumstances.

The infant, believed to be around one month old, was discovered by a 55-year-old woman of Albanian origin, who immediately alerted the authorities. The baby was transferred to the “Agia Sofia” Children’s Hospital, where it remains under observation as a precaution.

Shortly afterwards, a woman identified as the child’s mother presented herself at a local police station. She claimed that while shopping at a nearby supermarket, she had left her baby in the care of an unidentified man, who then allegedly disappeared with the child.

The mother, a member of the Roma community, was arrested on charges of neglecting the supervision of a minor and brought before a prosecutor.

Police are investigating her account and reviewing security footage from the supermarket in order to clarify how the baby ended up abandoned in the park.
