Athens Municipality Delivers Easter Cheer to 3,500 Senior Residents

The Easter gifts were distributed to members of the city’s Friendship Clubs as well as beneficiaries of the “Help at Home” program.

The Municipality of Athens marked the Easter season with a gesture of care and solidarity, offering festive gift packages to the city’s older residents.

Over two days—April 7 and 8, corresponding to Holy Tuesday and Holy Wednesday—staff from the municipality’s Department for the Elderly prepared Easter parcels for 3,500 senior citizens. The initiative took place at the municipal building, according to an official statement.

Athens Mayor Haris Doukas noted the symbolic importance of the initiative, stating: “During these holy days of Easter, we stand by our senior citizens, sending a message of love, solidarity, and meaningful support. Through these Easter packages, prepared once again this year by our municipal employees, we aim to offer not only material goods, but also a smile, a warm thought, and a reminder that no one is alone. With respect and care, we ensure that the message of the Resurrection reaches everyone, without exception.”

The Deputy Mayor for Education and Intergenerational Solidarity highlighted the broader significance of the effort. “Caring for our elderly remains a constant priority for the Municipality of Athens and a cornerstone of the intergenerational solidarity we strive to strengthen every day. Through this initiative, we reaffirm in practice that our city does not forget those who have contributed so much to society. These Easter packages are a small token of gratitude and respect, as well as an opportunity to maintain strong bonds between generations,” he noted.

The Easter gifts were distributed to members of the city’s Friendship Clubs as well as beneficiaries of the “Help at Home” program, with packaging and distribution carried out across all 25 Friendship Clubs operated by the municipality.
