Authorities in Athens are rolling out emergency measures to protect residents from soaring temperatures expected on Friday, August 22. The Municipality of Athens announced that seven Friendship Clubs (Leschi Filias) will operate as cooling centers from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., providing safe, air-conditioned spaces for citizens.
Cooling centers available across the city
The facilities are spread throughout the capital to ensure easy access for residents. Locations include Agios Pavlos, Neos Kosmos, Votanikos, Kolokynthou, Agios Eleftherios, Kypseli, and Ampelokipoi. Citizens, particularly those in vulnerable groups, can call the city’s 24-hour hotline at 1595 or 210 5287800 for assistance.
For health advice related to heat exposure, the city has also set up a “Heatwave Hotline” at 210 3638049, available daily from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Additional safety measures
Municipal services will remain on high alert. Crews from sanitation and green maintenance departments, along with municipal police patrols and drones, will monitor fire-prone areas and city parks. Thermal cameras will track temperature shifts in green spaces, while water tankers stand ready to assist if needed.
Support for homeless residents
Streetwork teams from the Athens Homeless Support Center will be active from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., distributing bottled water, snacks, and protective kits. Social workers, nurses, psychologists, and volunteers will also help transport people who wish to move to cooling centers.
Care for stray animals
The city has not forgotten its four-legged residents. Since early 2024, the municipal Animal Welfare Department has installed more than 100 new water dispensers for strays across neighborhoods. Guidance for pet owners and those who care for street animals during heatwaves is shared via the city’s social media channels.
With heatwaves becoming increasingly common in southern Europe, Athens’ measures aim to provide relief, safety, and support for both people and animals during the sweltering conditions.
