Authorities in Vorizia, Crete, are on high alert as the funeral of 39-year-old Fanouris Kargakis, killed in a recent shootout, takes place. Police are enforcing strict security measures to prevent further violence.
The deadly incident involved crossfire that also claimed the life of a 56-year-old woman, with her brother describing the traumatic scene: “The first thing I saw was my sister on the ground… Even if you killed me, I cannot tell you who was there,” he told local media, recalling how he tried to protect her during the chaos.
Three others were hospitalized but are reported in stable condition. The victims suffered multiple gunshot wounds, including shots to the leg, shoulder, chest, and lower back.
Security Measures and Investigation
The Greek police have cordoned off the village, controlling all entry points, checking vehicles, and conducting thorough searches of homes linked to the families involved. Authorities have confiscated firearms, ammunition, and knives.
Search efforts have expanded into nearby mountainous terrain, where three members of the Frangkiadakis family—suspected participants in the violence—are believed to be hiding. Ballistic tests are ongoing to determine the weapons used and the sequence of events during the shootings.
Schools in the area remain closed for the day, while the police continue to patrol and secure the community.
Local Authorities Speak Out
Heraklion Mayor Alexis Kalokairinos emphasized that Crete is subject to Greek law, rejecting the notion that local traditions allow tolerance for illegal firearms and violent behavior. In a public statement, he urged residents to reject vigilante justice and adhere to the law: “Opposition to lawlessness is the true vindication of Cretan courage. We must act with honesty and strength to end the endemic violence rooted in illegal weapons possession.”
The funeral and ongoing investigations highlight the fragility of public safety in Vorizia, with officials warning that retaliatory attacks cannot be ruled out.
