Baby Hospitalized in Rhodes After Parents Left Against Medical Advice

A four-month-old infant was admitted, left hospital prematurely, and later returned in critical condition before being airlifted to Athens for urgent care

A four-month-old baby was urgently transferred to a hospital in Athens after a rapidly deteriorating medical condition following an earlier discharge from a hospital in Rhodes against medical advice, according to hospital and local reports.

The infant, who was visiting from abroad with their family, initially presented at the emergency department of the General Hospital of Rhodes with breathing difficulties, fever, and reduced feeding. Medical staff assessed the child and recommended immediate hospital admission for close monitoring and treatment.

Parents left hospital despite medical advice

Despite the recommendation, the parents reportedly left the hospital with the infant in the early hours of April 3, 2026, without medical approval. The departure triggered concern among hospital staff and led to authorities being notified over a potential case of endangering a minor.

Emergency return in critical condition

Later the same day, at around 7:55 p.m., the baby was brought back to the hospital by ambulance in severe respiratory distress. Doctors immediately transferred the infant to the pediatric ward for urgent treatment and diagnostic evaluation.

Medical tests reportedly indicated septic shock caused by pneumonia, a life-threatening condition requiring immediate intensive care. The infant was intubated to support breathing and stabilize the condition.

Air transfer to Athens hospital

Due to the seriousness of the case, arrangements were made for an emergency air transfer to a specialist children’s hospital in Athens. The infant was transported in the early hours of April 4, accompanied by the father, while the mother remained in Rhodes.

Hospital sources reported that following intensive treatment and stabilization, the child’s condition improved significantly and the immediate danger to life had passed. Doctors expect the infant to be transferred out of intensive care within the coming days if no complications arise.

Police investigation launched

Alongside the medical emergency, authorities launched a parallel investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s initial discharge from hospital. Police located the family at their accommodation in Rhodes, where the mother was briefly detained as part of the inquiry.

She was later released by order of the prosecutor while the preliminary investigation continues. According to reports, she has raised concerns about hospital conditions and claimed there had been communication with medical staff prior to leaving, though official findings have not confirmed this account.
