Balcony Collapses Onto Parked Car in Thessaloniki

Part of a small balcony fell onto a parked vehicle and the road in the city center, causing a commotion in a busy area filled with shops, restaurants, cafes and bars

A section of a small balcony collapsed onto a parked car and the roadway Friday in central Thessaloniki, causing a commotion on Balanou Street near Athonos Square.

The area is particularly busy, with commercial stores, restaurants, cafes and bars nearby. No pedestrians were underneath the balcony when it fell.

An eyewitness described hearing a sudden impact that sounded like an earthquake. “I heard a bang, like an earthquake. We all came outside and saw this mess,” the witness said.

The witness added that a woman had been near the spot shortly before the collapse and had moved her car away. “Three minutes later, all of this fell,” they said.

The building is an old, single-story structure, while the upper floor remains unoccupied.

The vehicle damaged in the collapse had been parked at the site and had no occupants inside.
