For the first time in Greece, the internationally acclaimed Barcelona Flamenco Ballet will present a striking reinterpretation of Carmen on Monday, September 8, at the Dora Stratou Theater in Athens. The production is choreographed and directed by David Gutierrez, a leading figure in contemporary flamenco.
The timeless story, known worldwide from Prosper Mérimée’s novella and Georges Bizet’s opera, returns in a modern, daring form without losing the essence that made it a classic. Gutierrez blends flamenco with contemporary and modern dance, opera, symphonic music, jazz and Andalusian rhythms to create a performance charged with passion, intensity and artistic depth.
Live musicians perform on stage, adding raw energy and immediacy to the production, turning each performance into a unique experience. The music of Bizet remains at the core but is reimagined with flamenco and jazz influences, while new choreographies give fresh life to the legend.

Carmen is presented not only as a love story but as a powerful symbol of independence, freedom and female strength. The character of Carmen emerges as a contemporary, universal figure who defies violence and asserts her right to live and love freely.
The Barcelona Flamenco Ballet, founded in 2017 with the support of the Catalan government, has toured more than 50 countries to wide acclaim. Cultural journalist Matt Cooper of the Los Angeles Times has described Gutierrez as “an iconic figure in flamenco.”

With this production, Gutierrez transforms Carmen into a manifesto of freedom — a reimagining of the world-famous myth through the lens of the 21st century.
