Beaches Near Athens Fill Up From the Morning Amid Heatwave

Locals and visitors try to beat the heat from the early morning hours at local beaches.

Once again this morning, residents of the Athens basin made their way early to the coast, seeking an oasis from the relentless heatwave.

The country is baking under extreme temperatures, and as the hours go by, conditions are becoming increasingly difficult.

With thermometers hitting red in many parts of Greece over the weekend, beaches were packed with people seeking a breath of cool air and a few moments of relaxation by the sea. That seaside exodus has continued into today, Monday, July 7, 2025.

Crowded Beaches Again on Monday

From early Monday morning, both organized beaches and more secluded coves filled up with swimmers eager to take advantage of the opportunity for a summer dip. Many of them are local residents who prefer to swim early in the day before the heat peaks.

Meteorologists warn that the heatwave will continue in the coming days, with temperatures expected to reach—or even exceed—40°C in mainland regions of the country.

Scorching Nights Ahead

Particularly in Thessaly, Attica, the Peloponnese, and Central Greece, temperatures will remain extremely high, even overnight, making for uncomfortably warm nights.

Authorities are urging citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during peak heat hours, stay in cool indoor spaces, and keep well hydrated.

Unsurprisingly, the beach has become the ideal escape for both young and old, offering refreshment, fun, and a welcome break from the oppressive urban heat.
