Belarusian Man Arrested in Thessaloniki on Int’l Warrant

The Belarusian faces a series of serious criminal charges, including tax evasion, continuous breach of fiduciary duty.

Greek authorities have arrested a Belarusian national following an international arrest warrant on charges of financial crimes. The 65-year-old man, who was detained by officers of the Thessaloniki division of crimes, is alleged to have committed the crimes in Russia.

According to the police report, the agents acted on an outstanding provisional arrest issued by the Prosecutor’s Office of the Court of Appeal of Thessaloniki, as well as a decision by the Council of the Court of Appeal recommending his extradition to Belarus.

The Belarusian faces a series of serious criminal charges, including tax evasion, continuous breach of fiduciary duty, repeated failure to pay earned wages, participation in a criminal organization, embezzlement as a co-perpetrator, fraudulent concealment of assets causing exceptionally large losses, and abuse of authority, according to an official announcement.

The suspect is alleged to have committed the offenses in his capacity as a legal representative of various companies. The Thessaloniki Court of Appeals had previously issued an opinion in favor of his extradition to Russia; however, he failed to appear at the hearing, having been free under restrictive conditions, and was represented by a lawyer acting on his behalf.

Following his arrest, the 65-year-old was brought before the competent judicial authorities, where the question of his extradition will be examined.
