Police have taken a 19-year-old Italian male into custody after a British tourist, 18, accused him of attempting to rape her on the island of Kerkyra (Corfu).
The complaint by the alleged victim was filed in the early hours of Sunday, with police launching an immediate investigation to determine the veracity of the allegations.
According to reports by local media outlets and the British Daily Mail, the young suspect was partying with the British girl at a mall before the alleged sexual attack occurred.
The Italian man has reportedly not been officially arrested, as Greek police are still gathering information on the case, requesting anyone with more details about the reported incident to contact the local police station.
The Ionian island of Corfu, located off the western coast of mainland Greece, remains one of the top tourist destinations for Britons, receiving nearly half a million each year.
The young man was taken to the prosecutor’s office and is expected to appear before an investigating magistrate on Thursday.
