Bullying among school-aged children is growing at an alarming pace. What is even more concerning is how the rapid rise of social media has taken this problem beyond the classroom and into the digital space, where the abuse multiplies and leaves lasting psychological scars.
With young people spending more of their daily lives online, bullies now have a wider stage. Social interactions once confined to schoolyards are playing out across digital platforms, where anonymity and the false sense that “what happens online isn’t real” magnify the impact on victims. While the abuse may be virtual in form, the damage to a child or teenager’s mental health is painfully real.
The psychological impact
The growing overlap of school bullying and online harassment has created new challenges for psychologists. Increasingly, specialists are working with children and families affected by bullying, helping them rebuild confidence and develop coping strategies.
Schools and families alike are turning to counseling services, psycho-educational seminars, and family sessions as the demand for support rises. Experts highlight that children who suffer bullying are now more frequently seeking professional help to reclaim their lives and develop resilience.
The role of prevention
The demand for qualified professionals in child and adolescent psychology has never been greater. Preventive measures, early intervention, and specialized knowledge are essential to protecting young people’s mental health.
To meet this need, programs such as the online Master’s in Child and Adolescent Mental Health at the European University Cyprus (EUC) aim to provide professionals with the advanced skills required in this growing field. Courses focus on psychological development, policy trends, innovative practices, and research methods, equipping students to design strategies that promote inclusion and protect children and adolescents in schools and beyond.
Supervised by leading academics, students also gain hands-on research experience, preparing them to either contribute to applied mental health strategies or continue with doctoral studies in related fields.
Accessible education
The EUC’s Distance Learning Unit ensures equal access to education for students who wish to study at their own pace, in their own place, and in a way that fits their personal circumstances.
The university was awarded the top “5-Star” distinction for Distance Education in the 2024 QS Top Universities evaluation, confirming its position among leading institutions in Europe.
