Greek police arrested two suspected members of a burglary ring after a car chase in Aspropyrgos, west of Athens, on Thursday. The men, aged 28 and 31, were intercepted by officers from the Alimos Police Department, which has been investigating the group’s activities nationwide.
The chase began when the suspects attempted to break into a home in the town of Erythres. In their effort to escape, they allegedly hurled a fire extinguisher at a police patrol car but were quickly immobilized and taken into custody.
Organized operations since January
Authorities say the burglary ring had been active since January, operating in a highly organized manner. Members used rented cars and burglary tools to force entry into homes, often through doors and balcony windows.
The group allegedly stole cash and jewelry, sometimes breaking in while residents were inside, and frequently carrying out multiple burglaries in a single day. Police investigations link the suspects to at least 15 thefts across Attica, Arcadia, Corinthia, Argolida, and Katerini.
During the arrests, officers seized clothing used in burglaries, burglary tools, gloves, and four hunting cartridges.
Facing multiple charges
The two suspects face charges including participation in a criminal organization, aggravated theft, violence against police officers, and weapons violations. The 31-year-old was already wanted under an arrest warrant for similar crimes.
Both men have been referred to the prosecutor, while investigations continue to track down the six remaining members of the group identified by authorities.
