A passenger bus caught fire early Tuesday near Thessaloniki, destroying the vehicle but leaving all passengers and the driver unharmed, authorities said.
The incident occurred under still unclear circumstances as the intercity coach was traveling near the Sindos interchange, on an exit leading toward the industrial area of Sindos. The bus was carrying three passengers in addition to the driver.
According to initial information, a passing car alerted the driver after noticing smoke coming from the bus. The driver immediately pulled over and stopped the vehicle. All passengers disembarked safely before the fire spread.
The bus was completely burned, but no injuries were reported.
Five firefighters with two fire engines responded to the scene and brought the fire under control quickly. The driver later gave a statement to the fire service’s investigative unit, which is examining the cause of the blaze.
The bus had been traveling on a national highway and had taken the K20 exit toward Sindos when the fire broke out. According to local media reports, this is the second bus fire recorded within three days.
