Car Crash in Greece: “We couldn’t get them out, we could hear them begging”

A truck collided with two cars near the Iasmos tolls, leaving three people dead and two seriously injured, while witnesses described hearing victims plead for help

A devastating road accident on Greece’s Egnatia Highway claimed three lives on Monday afternoon, when a truck crashed into two cars just before the Iasmos toll station.

According to eyewitness accounts, one of the cars came to a sudden stop for reasons still unknown. The truck, approaching at high speed, struck the vehicle at the back, triggering a deadly chain collision. The impact caused one of the cars to burst into flames, trapping four people inside.

Three of them—a 59-year-old driver and two passengers aged 61 and 57—were killed instantly in the fire. A 49-year-old woman, the sole survivor from the vehicle, was rescued and hospitalized in shock.

The victims were part of the same group of friends who had been returning from a wedding. In the second car, a 36-year-old driver, his 28-year-old partner, and their two young children, aged six and four, escaped unharmed.

The truck driver, a Bulgarian national, remains in critical condition at Komotini Hospital, while his passenger is also hospitalized but out of danger.

An eyewitness described the harrowing scene:
“We couldn’t get them out; they were trapped. The fire spread within seconds, and then came explosions—probably the tires bursting. Tragically, we could hear them pleading for help.”

The blaze spread to nearby fields, requiring firefighters to intervene and bring it under control. Authorities are investigating the exact causes of the collision.
