Greek authorities continue to search for survivors following a deadly migrant shipwreck off the southern island of Gavdos, where three people — a man, a woman, and a child — lost their lives. Officials fear the death toll could rise, as it remains unclear whether all passengers have been accounted for.
According to the Hellenic Coast Guard, a 23-year-old man from Sudan was rescued and transferred in critical condition to Rethymno Hospital on Crete, suffering from severe pneumonia. The bodies of the three victims were taken to Chania Hospital for autopsy.
The wooden vessel is believed to have departed from Libya, carrying migrants from Sudan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Somalia, Yemen, and Syria. Survivors said they used a satellite phone to call for help as the boat began to sink. In total, 18 men from Bangladesh, 7 from Egypt, 7 from Somalia, 5 from Yemen, and 4 Syrians (including 3 minors) were rescued, along with 14 men from Sudan.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, a second migrant boat carrying 28 people arrived at Lentas, on Crete’s southern coast, early Tuesday morning. Among them were two women and a five-year-old child, while two passengers with health problems were taken to a local medical center.
Most of the migrants on this second boat were Sudanese nationals, with two Bangladeshis currently being investigated as possible smugglers. Authorities said the group will be temporarily housed in Heraklion.
