A period of colder weather is forecast to affect Greece through New Year’s Eve, with temperatures expected to fall from Friday and frost forming in several mainland areas.
According to the forecast, weather conditions on Friday will be unstable, with local rainfall across many parts of the country. Cloud cover will be intermittently dense, while rain is expected mainly in eastern Thessaly, Evia, the Sporades islands, eastern Central Greece, the Ionian Islands, and locally in western mainland regions.
Isolated thunderstorms are forecast in the Ionian Sea until midday. Weather phenomena are expected to gradually weaken in the afternoon, with rain stopping in most areas by evening.
Light snowfall is forecast for mountainous areas of central and northern mainland Greece.
Temperature and regional outlook
Temperatures will record a slight decline, particularly in northern regions. Maximum temperatures are forecast at:
- 10–12°C in northern mainland areas
- 13–16°C in eastern mainland regions
- 15–17°C in western areas
- 16–19°C elsewhere in the country
Local frost is expected early in the morning across northern mainland regions.
In Attica, skies will be overcast, with temperatures ranging from 7°C to 16°C and winds of 3–5 Beaufort.
Similar conditions are forecast for Thessaloniki, with temperatures between 6°C and 12°C and winds of 2–6 Beaufort.
Weather in the coming days
On Saturday, increased cloud cover is expected in eastern and southern areas, where local rain will occur. Winds will blow from easterly directions in western Greece at 3–5 Beaufort, and from northerly directions in eastern regions at 4–6 Beaufort, reaching 7 Beaufort locally in the Aegean Sea. Temperatures will drop slightly further nationwide, with frost again forming early in the morning in northern mainland areas.
On Sunday, weather conditions will be mostly fair, with limited local cloud cover. Northerly winds of 4–6 Beaufort are forecast, reaching 7 Beaufort locally in the southeastern Aegean. Temperatures are not expected to change significantly, while frost will occur locally in central and northern mainland regions during early morning hours.
Meteorologist Giannis Kallianos said that from Friday onward, temperatures will fall by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius, accompanied by northerly winds. He noted that the intense cold is expected to persist until New Year’s Eve, describing the pattern as a “cold intrusion” set to emerge in the final days of the year.
