Greek health authorities have issued an emergency alert after a couple was hospitalized in critical condition following the consumption of wild mushrooms.
The 65-year-old man and 55-year-old woman developed acute liver failure after eating mushrooms during a mushroom gathering and tasting event in the Edessa region. Initially admitted to the local hospital in Edessa, their condition rapidly deteriorated, prompting a transfer to AHEPA Hospital.
On Friday afternoon, both patients were moved to Ippokrateio Hospital, where they are currently receiving care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Authorities have confirmed that urgent liver transplants are required to save their lives.
The National Transplant Organization has mobilized to locate suitable liver donors. Italian medical centers have been contacted to facilitate the transplants, with officials aiming to arrange transfers within the same day.
