Crete Ferry Incident: 76-Year-Old Passenger Beaten

Greek authorities launch an investigation after a 76-year-old passenger was violently attacked by another driver aboard the ferry “Ariadne” near Chania. The port captain has been temporarily removed pending a formal administrative inquiry

Greek authorities have launched a formal investigation following the violent assault of a 76-year-old passenger aboard the ferry “Ariadne”, which was arriving at Chania harbor on October 22.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, and Island Policy, led by Vassilis Kikilias, ordered an Official Administrative Inquiry (EDE) into the actions of the Chania port captain and the ferry crew. The port captain has been temporarily removed from his duties while the investigation is underway.

Incident Details

The assault occurred inside the ferry’s vehicle garage as drivers prepared to disembark. According to reports, the 36-year-old assailant delayed boarding his vehicle, leading to an altercation with the elderly passenger. Eyewitnesses described the attack as severe, with the victim sustaining multiple blows to the face.

The passenger later recounted: “He hit me repeatedly, more than ten times, even as I tried to shield my head. Everyone around was indifferent. No crew member intervened.”

The victim’s son added that attempts to report the incident to the ferry staff immediately after disembarkation were unsuccessful, forcing them to seek legal action.

Authorities Respond

The ministry emphasized that such behavior is “absolutely unacceptable and will not be tolerated”, highlighting the importance of passenger safety and respect. A case has been filed with the local public prosecutor, and the suspect has been identified and is being sought by authorities.

The inquiry will also examine the ferry crew’s disciplinary responsibilities, including their failure to act during the attack and to promptly report the incident as required by regulations.

The incident has caused public concern in Crete, with fears of escalation or further disputes between drivers aboard the ferry.
