Greece’s Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias, commemorated the five-year anniversary of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) agreement between Greece and Egypt with a strong statement highlighting the deal’s strategic and diplomatic importance.
He continued by reaffirming Greece’s role as a “pillar of stability and security” in the Eastern Mediterranean.
In a message shared on social media platform X, Dendias — who held the position of Foreign Minister when the agreement was signed — emphasized that the 2020 agreement with Cairo secured Greece’s national interests “with full respect for International Law and the Law of the Sea.”
“Five years since the signing of the delimitation agreement of the EEZ with Egypt, through which we secured our national interests with respect for International Law and the Law of the Sea.”
The agreement with Cairo, signed after months of regional maritime tensions, established Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) boundaries between the two countries — a significant move in strengthening Greece’s position on maritime rights.
Dendias emphasized that the agreement sent a clear and lasting signal about Greece’s diplomatic principles and regional posture. “An agreement that sent the message that Greece is a force of security and stability in the region,” he wrote.
“It does not threaten the rights of other countries, it does not engage in illegal agreements, nor does it coerce other countries into one-sided arrangements.”
The statement carries implications for regional geopolitics, coming at a time of continued tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The Greece–Egypt deal also gained added importance in response to the controversial maritime memorandum signed between Turkey and Libya in 2019, which Athens rejected as illegal and expansive.
Greek military and defense officials, along with international representatives, were also present during recent meetings commemorating the agreement’s legacy. The event reflects the continued strategic significance of the EEZ deal for Greek defence policy and regional partnerships.
