A two-year-old girl was rushed to a children’s hospital in Athens after being bitten on the head by a dog inside a home in the port city of Piraeus, in an incident that led to the arrest of her grandmother on suspicion of child endangerment.

The child was taken to the “Agia Sophia” Children’s Hospital on Sunday afternoon after the attack, which occurred while she was under the supervision of her 51-year-old grandmother, who is originally from the Netherlands.

Incident inside the home

According to information from the scene, the toddler briefly moved out of the grandmother’s sight and entered a room where a dog was present. The animal then attacked the child, biting her on the head.

Authorities say the grandmother immediately alerted the police following the incident.

Emergency hospital transfer

The child was transported to hospital in a private vehicle, escorted by officers from Greece’s rapid response police unit to ensure swift arrival at medical care.

Doctors reported that the girl suffered head injuries but is not believed to be in life-threatening condition. She remains under close medical observation.

Following the incident, police arrested the grandmother on charges of child endangerment.
