A 28-year-old American basketball player competing in Greece’s second-tier Elite League was arrested after driving his car onto active railway tracks in central Athens while under the influence of alcohol, Greek police said.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Konstantinoupoleos Avenue and Iera Odos in Athens, where the driver entered the railway lines and continued driving along the tracks for approximately 300 metres, authorities said. The vehicle eventually came to a halt, causing a serious disruption and prolonged obstruction of rail services in the area.
Police officers arrived on the scene and subjected the driver to an alcohol test. The results showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.51 mg/l in the first test and 0.56 mg/l in the second, well above the legal limit.
During identity checks, police also determined that the man did not possess valid documents allowing his legal stay in Greece.
A criminal case has been filed against him on charges of dangerous driving, obstruction of transport services, and violations of immigration laws related to illegal entry and residence, police said.
