Traffic congestion is intensifying across Greece as thousands of holidaymakers return to urban centers following the Easter break, with significant delays reported on major roads, toll stations and transport hubs.
According to traffic authorities, more than 61,000 vehicles have already returned to the wider Athens area within a 24-hour period, contributing to heavy congestion on key highways.
Major bottlenecks on highways
The most severe delays are being recorded on the main highway linking Athens to the western part of the country. Traffic jams stretch for long distances, particularly near coastal areas and popular return routes, with congestion worsening at several points along the way.
Conditions are slightly better on the northern highway connecting Athens to central Greece, although delays are still reported, especially near toll stations where traffic flow has slowed.
Elsewhere, long queues have formed at multiple toll booths across the country, with some lines extending for several kilometers.
Increased pressure on ports and intercity transport
Ports are also experiencing a surge in arrivals, as dozens of ferries bring passengers back from island destinations. High traffic volumes have been reported at major ports, while intercity bus terminals are also seeing a steady increase in passenger numbers.
Police measures and expectations
Authorities have deployed increased traffic control measures nationwide, aiming to facilitate safer travel and prevent road accidents during the peak return period.
Traffic police warn that congestion is expected to intensify as the day progresses, with conditions likely to ease later in the evening. A second wave of returning travelers is anticipated the following day, which could further strain the road network.
Restrictions on heavy vehicles remain in place until late evening in an effort to improve traffic flow and reduce risks on busy highways.
