efood Halts Delivery as Greece Braces for Severe Weather

The Ministry of Labor has also announced a package of extraordinary measures for the private sector, effective Wednesday, January 21, aimed at safeguarding employees in regions expected to experience extreme conditions.

Food delivery platform efood is suspending its delivery service following an announcement by the Ministry of Labor on emergency measures to protect workers amid the severe weather sweeping across Greece in recent hours.

In a statement, the company said that, “in light of the impending extreme weather conditions, efood has scheduled the suspension of delivery operations in all affected areas and for the duration of the phenomena, in line with the relevant instructions issued by the ministry.” The move comes as authorities seek to limit outdoor work during periods of heightened risk.

The Ministry of Labor has also announced a package of extraordinary measures for the private sector, effective Wednesday, January 21, aimed at safeguarding employees in regions expected to experience extreme conditions, according to the updated Emergency Weather Bulletin issued by the Greek National Meteorological Service.

First, a mandatory halt to outdoor manual work will be enforced in specific regions and timeframes. In the Peloponnese region, work must stop between 6:00 am and 6:00 pm, while in Attica and the regional units of Boeotia and Evia, the suspension applies from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, January 21.

The measure covers activities such as construction and technical works, shipyards, and the delivery and transport of goods using two-wheeled vehicles, scooters or similar means. It applies to all workers, regardless of employment status.

Exemptions are provided for critical sectors, including health services, transport and public utilities, provided that strict health and safety measures and appropriate personal protective equipment are ensured.

Additionally, the ministry is urging private companies to implement remote work wherever feasible, and is allowing greater flexibility in working hours without prior notification to the ERGANI information system, to ease employee commuting during the severe weather.
