Eight Injured in Crete Crash, 21-Year-Old in Intensive Care

A violent collision between a taxi carrying British tourists and a pickup truck on Crete’s highway left eight people injured, including a young man in critical condition

A serious road accident occurred in the early hours of Friday (August 22) on Crete’s Northern Highway (VOAK) near Bali, Rethymno, leaving eight people injured, three of them in serious condition.

The crash took place shortly before 1 a.m. when a taxi and a pickup truck collided with force, prompting an immediate response from the fire brigade to free a foreign passenger trapped in the wreckage.

Among the most severely injured is a 21-year-old man who was in the pickup truck. He sustained head injuries and, after initial treatment at Rethymno Hospital, was transferred to Venizelio Hospital in Heraklion, where he remains in intensive care.

Two British tourists, parents of two young children who were in the taxi, were also seriously injured and are being treated in hospital. The children were not harmed but are said to be in shock.

The remaining injured include four other British visitors and three passengers from the pickup truck. All were taken to local hospitals, though their lives are not believed to be in danger.

The crash’s impact was so severe that firefighters had to cut through the taxi to free one of the British passengers. In total, five ambulances were dispatched to the scene by Greece’s emergency medical services (EKAV). Traffic police on the VOAK have launched an investigation into the causes of the collision.
