A 30-year-old man in northern Greece was arrested after allegedly detaining a 79-year-old Swedish woman he met on Facebook, seizing her money and mistreating her until police intervened

Greek authorities have rescued a 79-year-old Swedish woman who was held captive for 40 days by a 30-year-old man in the city of Xanthi.

According to reports, the two met through Facebook, where the man allegedly manipulated the woman by feigning romantic interest. Once she arrived in Greece, he kept her locked inside his home, subjected her to mistreatment, and took all of her money.

The case came to light after the victim managed to send a message to a relative, who then alerted Swedish authorities. Interpol notified Greek police, who located the woman during a raid on the suspect’s home. She was found in poor condition, with visible bruises and injuries, according to medical examiners.

The woman is being treated in the pathology clinic of Xanthi General Hospital and is expected to return to Sweden soon. The 30-year-old suspect is due to testify before an investigative judge.
