The European Commission has approved a one-year extension of a special visa program allowing Turkish citizens and their family members to visit select Greek islands in the Aegean, Greece’s Foreign Ministry confirmed.
The renewed scheme will take effect on April 1, 2026, and will continue to offer short-stay visas issued directly at entry points in island ports. Each visa will permit a stay of up to seven days.
Which Greek islands are included?
The express visa program applies to 12 islands in the eastern Aegean, many of which are located close to the Turkish coast. These are: Kalymnos, Kastellorizo, Kos, Rhodes, Symi, Leros, Patmos, Lesvos, Limnos, Samos, Chios. Samothrace
These destinations have been key beneficiaries of the initiative, attracting Turkish visitors for short holidays and boosting local economies.
Strong support from Greece, Turkey, and local communities
Both Greece and Turkey strongly supported the continuation of the program. Local island communities have also advocated for its renewal, citing clear economic and tourism-related benefits.
The scheme has been widely viewed as a practical measure that brings communities closer while supporting regional development.
Greek officials have emphasized the program’s success so far. The prime minister has described its impact as “extremely positive” for the eastern Aegean islands, which have seen increased visitor flows from Turkey.
How the express visa works
The express visa is issued upon arrival at the designated ports on the participating islands, simplifying travel for Turkish nationals. Its seven-day duration makes it particularly suited for short getaways and weekend trips.
