An explosion during the construction of homemade rockets injured six people on the Greek island of Chios just days before Easter, authorities said.
The blast occurred in an area where participants were preparing for a traditional Easter custom known for its use of improvised rockets. Officials said the explosion was likely caused by a handling error inside a storage facility.
All six individuals, five men and a woman. aged between 20 and 40, suffered injuries, including second-degree burns.
According to hospital officials, four of the injured required admission due to the severity of their burns, which in some cases covered up to 50% of their bodies.
Despite the intensity of the explosion, authorities said it was “pure luck” that no fatalities were reported.
Police arrested all six individuals for violations of fireworks regulations and have launched a broader investigation into illegal rocket-making activities.
Searches are ongoing in homes and storage spaces, as authorities seek to identify additional individuals involved in the construction of the devices.
The incident has reignited concerns over the risks associated with traditional Easter celebrations involving homemade fireworks and rockets.
Health officials noted that injuries from such activities remain common each year, including severe burns, amputations, and cases requiring intensive care.
