Greece’s Civil Protection Authority has issued an extreme wildfire risk warning for ten regions on Wednesday, placing local fire services on partial alert as the country braces for potentially dangerous conditions.
According to the official Fire Risk Forecast Map, the regions facing the highest threat include:
- Attica (including Kythira)
- Peloponnese
- Western Greece
- Epirus (Preveza, Arta)
- Thessaly (Sporades)
- Central Greece (Fthiotida, Boeotia, Fokida, Euboea including Skyros)
- Ionian Islands (Lefkada, Kefalonia, Ithaca, Zakynthos)
- Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (Kavala, Thasos, Xanthi, Rhodope, Evros including Samothraki)
- Central Macedonia (Halkidiki including Mount Athos)
- North Aegean (Lesvos, Limnos)
The Civil Protection Authority has notified all relevant national and local agencies to remain on heightened readiness to respond to any fire outbreaks.
Residents in the affected areas are urged to exercise extreme caution and avoid outdoor activities that could ignite fires. Prohibited actions include burning dry grass or branches, using machinery that generates sparks, welding, operating outdoor grills, smoking beehives, and discarding lit cigarettes.
Authorities also remind the public that during the official fire season, burning fields is strictly banned.
