Farmer unionist Christos Sideropoulos has filed a complaint alleging police brutality during recent protests at the Nikaia junction in Greece. The demonstrations, part of broader farmer blockades across the country, were marked by clashes between protesters and law enforcement.
The Incident
According to Sideropoulos, a police officer assaulted him on two separate occasions. He claims the officer first grabbed him by the neck during a discussion with other officers, and later forced him to the ground, pressing a knee against his neck and striking him in the ribs. The unionist is currently hospitalized with a broken rib and severe headaches.
Speaking to local media, Sideropoulos described the events: “We were negotiating with the police to avoid tear gas and stun grenades as people were already on the streets. During the discussion, an officer attacked me, grabbing my neck. Later, while I was near a police vehicle, he struck me again, forcing me to the ground and pressing his knee against my neck. The pain was intense, and I now have a fractured rib.”
The Nikaia protest is part of ongoing farmer blockades affecting key transportation routes in Greece. Tensions have escalated due to disputes over agricultural policies and perceived lack of government response to farmers’ demands.
