Ferries Docked at Greek Ports as Gale-Force Winds Hit

Sailings from Piraeus, Lavrio and Rafina to the Cyclades and other islands have been halted until at least midday due to severe winds, with authorities also on high alert for wildfires across much of the country

Strong gale-force winds have brought ferry traffic to a standstill at Greece’s major ports of Piraeus, Lavrio and Rafina, disrupting travel plans for hundreds of passengers bound for the Cyclades and other Aegean islands. Authorities have issued a sailing ban until at least 1 p.m. local time, urging travelers to confirm schedules with local port authorities before setting out.

The restriction does not apply to ferries serving the nearby Saronic Gulf islands.

Wildfire Alert Across Large Parts of Greece
The severe weather has also prompted heightened wildfire risk warnings. Greece’s Civil Protection agency has placed Attica, Central Greece and the Peloponnese on its highest alert level, citing dangerous conditions for the ignition and rapid spread of forest fires.

A “red alert” (risk category 5) has been issued for Attica, Boeotia, Euboea, Argolis, Corinthia and Laconia, while eleven other regions face a “very high” risk (category 4), including Crete, the Cyclades, parts of the Ionian Islands, and large areas of Northern and Eastern Greece.

Authorities Urge Public Caution
Officials have called on residents and visitors to avoid any activities that could spark a blaze, such as burning dry grass, using equipment that produces sparks, or operating outdoor grills. Civil Protection services remain on high readiness, with firefighting resources mobilized nationwide.

Citizens are urged to report any signs of fire immediately by calling the emergency number 199.

With both maritime travel disruptions and elevated fire danger, Greek authorities are asking the public to stay informed, remain vigilant, and follow safety guidance as adverse weather grips the country.
