Ferry breakdown leaves passengers stranded in Piraeus

A mechanical failure halted a ferry bound for Aegina, leaving dozens of travelers and vehicles stuck at Greece’s busiest port until another vessel could take them

Travel plans for dozens of people were disrupted on Thursday morning when a ferry scheduled to depart from Piraeus for the island of Aegina suffered a mechanical failure.

The passenger and vehicle ferry Eleni was preparing to set sail with 64 passengers, 10 cars, 12 trucks and five motorcycles on board. However, authorities imposed a sailing ban after the malfunction was detected, preventing the vessel from leaving the port.

As a result, both passengers and vehicles remained at the dock, waiting for a replacement ferry to complete the scheduled route. According to a statement from the Hellenic Coast Guard, arrangements are being made by the operating company to transfer all ticket holders to their destination.

Piraeus is Greece’s largest port and a major gateway to the islands, making disruptions like this particularly impactful during peak travel times. While such incidents are not frequent, they highlight the reliance of island connections on smooth ferry operations.
