A fire broke out shortly after midnight on Friday, July 11, at a commercial premises in Mykonos, prompting an emergency warning to island residents due to heavy and hazardous smoke.
The blaze started in a laundry facility located on the provincial road connecting Mykonos Town and Ano Mera. Due to the presence of flammable substances such as detergents, authorities triggered an emergency alert through the 112 warning system.
Residents received a text message urging them to stay indoors and keep doors and windows shut to protect themselves from the toxic fumes.
The message from the Civil Protection service read:
“Fire in a commercial premises in Mykonos. Dangerous smoke in the area. Stay indoors. Keep doors and windows closed. Follow instructions from authorities.”
The Fire Department was notified of the incident around 12:20 a.m. and responded immediately. Six firefighters and two fire engines were dispatched to the scene to combat the flames.
The firefighting operation remains ongoing, as the fire has also spread to bedding and other flammable materials, making the situation more complex and time-consuming to fully contain.
