A large fire erupted on Friday morning in the Sindos Industrial Zone, located west of Thessaloniki, prompting an emergency alert to nearby residents.
According to early reports, the blaze began around 9:30 AM in the outdoor area of a recycling and waste management facility. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage.
The Fire Service reported that materials currently burning include waste, wooden pallets, and tires – all of which can produce thick, hazardous smoke. Firefighting teams are already on the scene with significant ground forces working to bring the situation under control.
In response to the fire and the spread of potentially dangerous smoke, Greece’s Civil Protection Authority activated the 112 emergency alert system. Residents in the surrounding area received a warning message urging them to stay indoors with doors and windows shut.
The message advised: “Dangerous smoke. Remain indoors. Keep doors and windows closed. Follow the instructions of the authorities.”
Efforts to contain the fire are ongoing, and authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
