A tragic incident unfolded in Athens early Friday morning when a five-month-old baby girl was found unresponsive in her family home. The infant had been sharing a bed with her parents, while her twin brother slept nearby.
The baby’s parents, both 19 years old, immediately called authorities and rushed her to Agia Olga Hospital, where doctors confirmed her death. The exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy remain unclear, and authorities are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination to establish the cause.
Speaking to Live News, the baby’s mother said they had taken precautions to safely co-sleep with both children and denied that either parent could have accidentally rolled onto the baby during sleep. She explained that the child was born slightly premature and had issues with reflux but had otherwise been healthy.
The mother described the heartbreaking scene: “We woke up and found our little girl cold. We had planned everything carefully so both our babies could sleep safely with us if they didn’t sleep in the crib. We can’t explain what happened yet and await the autopsy.”
She added that the twin brother was awake and playing nearby when the incident occurred. The family had upcoming plans for a wedding and baptism celebrations, making the loss even more devastating.
Michalis Giannakos, president of POEDHN, confirmed that medical staff attempted resuscitation immediately but were unable to save the child. He noted that the baby had spent two months in a neonatal unit after birth and had no external injuries.
