After scams involving parking passes, electricity bills, and fake traffic violations, the University of Thessaly has become the latest target of fraudsters.
Through a social media post, scammers are using the university’s name and logo to promote fake online courses for people over 50, trying to lure unsuspecting citizens to a dangerous link.
According to the post in question, starting in August 2026 the university would supposedly offer 189 online courses for people aged 50 and older, with the promise of a certificate upon completion.
The post includes a link inviting interested people to view the supposed courses. It is a trap, though, since the scammers are trying to obtain personal and banking information from their victims.
The University of Thessaly issued a statement warning that this is a scam and urging citizens not to interact with the post.
The institution stated that the post circulating on Facebook, published by an unofficial page using the University of Thessaly’s name and/or logo, is fraudulent.
The university clarified that the page and post have no connection to the University of Thessaly and have not been approved by any of its services, schools, or departments.
What citizens should do
The university is asking citizens to:
- Not click on the links in the post
- Not enter personal or banking information
- Not make any payments
- Report the page and the post to Facebook
- Not share the original link

For anyone who has already entered their information, the university recommends changing their passwords immediately. If banking details were provided, they should contact their bank right away, along with the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate at 11188.
